My Book

The book, entitled It Was Better Than Working, is mainly my life story but also tells of some of the history of life in the village of Flookburgh and of the fishing industry over the past 130 years.  There is a chapter about the various methods of fishing that were used but are no longer, and of those still in use.

There is also an account of what things were like here during WWII, with the busy army camp and wartime airfield.

Some of my experiences as an amateur musician and brass band enthusiast are also recalled.

In a review of my book in the Westmorland Gazette, Alan Tunningley called it “A remarkable autobiography”.

In the Northwest Evening Mail, Edith Batchelor said: “The book tells in an articulate, but chatty style with around 60 accompanying pictures, of his first trip to the sands aged around five, his education at Ulverston Grammar School, his experience of the Second World War, the evolution of fishing practices, the incidents he has had on the bay, his love of music, and more.
