My Book

The book, entitled It Was Better Than Working, is mainly my life story but also tells of some of the history of life in the village of Flookburgh and of the fishing industry over the past 130 years.  There is a chapter about the various methods of fishing that were used but are no longer, and of those still in use.

There is also an account of what things were like here during WWII, with the busy army camp and wartime airfield.

Some of my experiences as an amateur musician and brass band enthusiast are also recalled.

I have now sold out of books but there may be a few copies in local bookshops.

I now have two new booklets out, one is called ‘Chapel Island’ which tells the reader about the history of the island over the past 700 years - who owned it, what there is to see there, including the birds that nest on the island.   There are a number of photographs to illustrate several aspects.

The second booklet is called ‘Cowp Scar and its hidden Fish Traps
This an account of how the channel of the river Leven moved across the western estuary on north west Morecambe Bay and exposed a number of fish traps that had been under up to 15 feet of sand for hundreds of years.  These were proved to date back to the 14th century.

These can be obtained from several shops inj Flookburgh, Grange, Kendal, Ulverston and Carnforth as well as from the public libraries at Kendal and Grange.
